Potato Hill powder turns

On March 25th 2018, Karis and I, along with our friends Alyssa and Andreas, went for a pleasant tour near Santiam Pass. Accompanied by our dog buddies Greta and ZigZag we made a motley crew of 6, exploring the fresh powder in this super accessible backcountry area. It's about an hour drive from Bend to get to the starting point of this tour, a bit longer if you stop for Sisters Coffee, but well worth the extra few minutes for a quality cup.

From Potato Hill Sno Park, the skin approach took about 90 minutes and soon we were on a ridge looking out toward HooDoo ski area and partially obscured views of the Willamette National Forest. We were the only ones atop the summit of Potato Hill, which was surprising considering the recent dump of fresh, light snow.

The runs here are rather short, but can be steep toward the top of Potato Hill and provide a nice mix of tree and open glade skiing for skiers of all abilities. After 2 laps we were all tired and were looking forward to skiing all the way back to the car on the forest road. This was pure Type 1 fun and a recommended outing if you have dogs, as much of the terrain closer to Bend is off limits to them in the winter. After getting out of our boots and sharing celebratory beers it was back to town by early afternoon, a half-day well spent!
